Activist Ruby Khan ends her hunger strike

KATHMANDU: A five-point agreement was reached on Tuesday to end rights activist Ruby Khan’s 23-day hunger strike.

Khan had been staging a hunger strike at Sanjeevani College of Medical Sciences in Nepalgunj. A special government team, comprising AIG Sushil Singh Rathour from Nepal Police Headquarters, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Anand Kafle, and PM’s press advisor Deepa Dahal, had held talks with Khan since Monday.

Khan launched her hunger strike demanding an impartial investigation into the alleged abduction, illegal detention, and murder of Nirmala Kurmi of Banke.

As per the agreement, the government will review the investigation conducted so far into the case which was registered at the District Police Office, Banke, in April 2021 and proceed with the judicial process at the earliest.

The government team also expressed its commitment to investigate other cases raised by Khan through the Lumbini Province Police Office and to take legal action against responsible police personnel if any negligence is found.

Meanwhile, the government has also agreed to provide necessary security to Khan and other women’s rights activists involved in the movement for justice for Nirmala Kurmi.
