Suspects will face justice regardless of time: IG Karki Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki

KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Nepal Police Dan Bahadur Karki has said that criminal incidents are stored in the police force’s institutional memory and that suspects will be brought to justice regardless of how much time passes.

Talking to the RSS news agency, Karki said police have been arresting and prosecuting suspects even decades after a crime.

“Individual memories fade quickly, but Nepal Police is an institution that fights continuously for justice,” Karki said. “This organization does not forget such crimes.”

However, Karki acknowledged that long-standing cases do not always yield immediate success. “Through continuous research and re-examination of old cases, the organization remains committed to bringing perpetrators to justice,” he said, adding that specialized teams formed to investigate high-profile cold cases have achieved notable breakthroughs in several instances.

Karki added that the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has been investigating past heinous crimes while simultaneously handling current cases.

Addressing broader security challenges, Karki warned that evolving technology, changing social dynamics and new operational tactics are creating complex threats all over the world. Traditional investigation methods are often insufficient to handle these cases, he added.

“To keep the police force’s morale high, we have introduced performance indicators to ensure transparent evaluations and give officers clear paths for professional development,” he said.

He added that digital initiatives, including updates to the Nepal Police mobile app, now allow people to submit applications and track inquiries remotely without visiting a police station.

In response to a rise in tech-based and financial crimes, Karki emphasized the need for specialized personnel to deal with such cases. He added that specialized units have been created to look into such cases.

Karki added that the Nepal Police was coordinating with international police forces, Interpol, and specialized agencies abroad to tackle cross-border criminal networks.

“Nepal Police is adopting modern policing standards and collaborating with elite international law enforcement partners,” Karki said, expressing confidence in the force’s ability to counter tech-enabled crime.

Describing the police as the closest state presence to the public, Karki called for broad community cooperation to maintain peace and order.

“To fulfill our mandate, we always rely on public support,” he said. “I urge people to help us by reporting individuals involved in criminal activity.”
