KATHMANDU: The government has decided to build mortuaries capable of handling a large number of bodies during natural disasters.
The Ministry of Health and Food Safety has decided to build mortuaries capable of accommodating at least 50 bodies each at 12 federal hospitals and health science academies across the country.
According to the ministry, the facility will be built at Koshi Hospital in Morang, Narayani Hospital in Parsa, Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital in Saptari, Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan, Bheri Hospital in Banke and Dadeldhura Hospital in Dadeldhura.
Mortuaries will also be built at the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Kathmandu, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Sunsari, Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Lalitpur, Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences in Kaski, Rapti Academy of Health Sciences in Dang and Karnali Academy of Health Sciences in Jumla.
Minister for Health and Food Safety Nisha Mehta said the need for such infrastructure was felt after the government encountered difficulties in managing bodies during past disasters and the challenges faced during the recent Bhotekoshi floods.
