Flood in Therang stream sweeps away four houses, bridge in Gorkha

GORKHAR: A flood in the Therang stream, which flows through Wards 4 and 2 of the Chumnubri Rural Municipality in the northern Himalayan region of Gorkha district, has swept away four houses and a bridge.

According to the District Police Office, Gorkha, the flood on Sunday morning swept away the houses of Nurbu Chhiring, Urgen Chhoden, Lakpa Bhuti and Dorje Gyalzen in Chumnubri-4.

No human casualties have been reported, according to DSP Rajkumar Shrestha, chief of the District Police Office, Gorkha. He said that local residents managed to save themselves by fleeing after learning that a flood was coming.

The flood also swept away a suspension bridge in the same area, police say.

As the flood occurred on the popular Manaslu Circuit trail, the loss of the bridge is expected to cause difficulties for trekkers. Chumnubri Rural Municipality Chairperson Nima Lama said locals could make temporary arrangements to allow people to cross on foot.

Assistant Chief District Officer of Gorkha, Netraprasad Sharma, said the flood, carrying mud and debris, caused damage after the river was temporarily blocked near its source.

As the river flows into the Budhi Gandaki River, authorities have urged residents living along the Budhi Gandaki riverbanks to remain alert.
