Nepali mission in Hong Kong marks Buddha Jayanti, Sagarmatha Day

KATHMANDU: The Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong organized an event titled “Nepal: Peaks and Peace 2026” earlier this week to mark the 2570th Buddha Jayanti and the 73rd International Sagarmatha Day.

The event was organized to highlight Nepal as the birthplace of Buddha and home to Sagarmatha (Mt Everest).

According to the Consulate, Acting Consul General Satish Gurung said Nepal uniquely represents both the ultimate physical endurance and the most profound spiritual enlightenment.

Addressing the event, Gurung praised Hong Kong’s mountaineering community for its longstanding relationship with Nepal and highlighted Nepal’s efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure, services and regional connectivity in Lumbini. He also called for deeper cooperation in the travel and hospitality sectors.

Also speaking at the program, Peter Lund, Consul-General of New Zealand in Hong Kong, reflected on the enduring ties among New Zealand, Sagarmatha and Nepal. He recalled the contribution of the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation in Nepal and highlighted the close bond between New Zealanders and the Sherpa community.

The event was attended by members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, including Vincent Cheng Wing-shun, Holden Chow Ho-ding and Prof Priscilla Leung Mei-fun, along with members of the Consular Corps, travel and hospitality industry representatives, chamber officials and leaders of the Nepali community.

The Consulate also hosted a dinner featuring Nepali cuisines like chhoila and momo.
