KATHMANDU: Germany is providing an assistance worth around 8 million euros to Nepal to support communities affected by the recent Bhotekoshi floods and contribute to recovery efforts.
According to the Embassy of Germany in Kathmandu, the assistance combines emergency relief, humanitarian support, development cooperation and funding through European and multilateral mechanisms.
Germany is providing emergency supplies worth more than 500,000 euros through the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism. The supplies include kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, drinking-water equipment and camp beds.
The relief materials were provided by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, as well as the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the German state of Thuringia, the embassy said in a statement.
Germany is also providing 200,000 euros in direct support to two civil society organizations addressing urgent humanitarian needs. According to the statement, one project will focus on the health and well-being of pregnant women, new mothers and newborns affected by the disaster. The second project will form part of the European Union’s humanitarian response and support income opportunities for disaster-affected households, infrastructure recovery and improved conditions in displacement camps, it added.
Germany has mobilized an additional 7.35 million euros through its development cooperation. The funds are provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), according to the statement.
