KATHMANDU: A flight carrying 84 tons of critical humanitarian supplies landed in Kathmandu on Friday morning with the support of the European Union Humanitarian Aid.
According to a statement issued on Friday, UNICEF will dispatch the supplies to support children and families affected by the devastating flash floods in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river basin.
“As humanitarian needs continue to rise, thousands of children and families require urgent support across the affected districts. Many families have lost homes, belongings, access to safe water and sanitation, while damage to schools, health facilities and essential infrastructure continues to disrupt children’s lives,” UNICEF said in the statement.
The European Union-supported flight departed from UNICEF’s global supply and logistics hub in Copenhagen. It carried emergency supplies to support hundreds of thousands of people.
“The lifesaving cargo included acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) kits and diagnostic equipment; water tanks, hygiene kits and water treatment supplies; tents; winter clothing kits for infants and children, and learning materials,” the statement added.
UNICEF Representative in Nepal Alice Akunga said these supplies arrived in Nepal at a critical moment for children and families affected by the floods. “Thousands of children have seen their lives turned upside down in a matter of minutes. Many have lost their homes, their classrooms, and their sense of normalcy. This shipment will help us deliver urgently needed support and reach children and families with services that protect their health, wellbeing and future,” she added.
Thomas Millar, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the EU Delegation to Nepal, said they were supporting communities with essential humanitarian assistance, while strengthening preparedness, early warning systems and local response capacities to help save lives and build resilience for the future.
