KATHMANDU: The government of China’s Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet) has provided two 100-metre-long Bailey bridges for flood-affected areas in Nepal.
The agreement for handover of the bridges was signed and exchanged during a ceremony held at the Consulate General of Nepal in Lhasa on Friday. Nepal’s Consul General Laxmi Prasad Niraula and Ouyang Zhibing, deputy director general of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Xizang Autonomous Region, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.
The Consulate General of Nepal had requested the Xizang Foreign Affairs Office to provide 30 Bailey bridges for areas affected by the recent Bhotekoshi River flood.
According to the consulate, the Bailey bridges have already reached the Korala border in Upper Mustang and will be received by the Nepali authorities on Friday.
China has also agreed to provide technical personnel to facilitate the efficient and smooth installation of the bridges. The technicians are expected to arrive in Nepal soon.
Officials from the Nepali Consulate General in Lhasa and the Foreign Affairs Office of the Xizang Autonomous Region were present on the occasion.
The Bhotekoshi flood caused extensive damage to roads and bridges in several districts, disrupting transport links and cutting off access to several areas.
