KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Special Committee on the Impact of Climate Change in the Himalayas, Climate Justice and the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli Disaster has approved its terms of reference.
The committee approved the terms of reference at a meeting held on Thursday.
“With this, the scope of our work has become clearer,” committee member and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Anushka Shrestha said. “We need to build on the important work already carried out by government agencies, make maximum use of available resources and coordinate our efforts. Where necessary, we should also leave sufficient room for independent studies and discussions.”
According to the committee, its work will cover the impact of climate change and disasters ranging from Himalayan communities to settlements along rivers that are vulnerable to climate risks.
Ganesh Parajuli was elected unopposed as chairperson of the 15-member committee on Thursday. Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal administered the oath of office and secrecy to Parajuli the same day.
The House of Representatives formed the committee on September 21.
Achyutam Lamichhane, Gangadevi Shrestha, Dhruva Raj Rai, Dhananjaya Regmi, Nisha Dangi, Pushpa Raj Kandel, Mohan Acharya, Ramesh Kumar Malla, Mingma Gyalbu Sherpa, Rabindra Patel, Saraswati Lama, Sujata Tamang and Sita Thapaliya are the other members of the committee.
The committee’s objective is to study the impact of climate change in the Himalayas and the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster and recommend measures for the rehabilitation of affected citizens, sustainable reconstruction, future risk reduction, necessary legal and institutional reforms and climate justice.
