Prime Minister Balendra Shah
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah is set to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly to raise the issues of climate change in the Himalayas and the recent Bhotekoshi floods on the international stage.
Foreign ministry sources say the Prime Minister plans to articulate Nepal’s stance on the recent devastating disasters, the growing climate risks in the Himalayas, and the role the global community must play to mitigate these risks in his address to the UN General Assembly.
The government had earlier decided to send a small team led by the foreign minister to the General Assembly. However, it has now been decided that the Prime Minister will lead the Nepali delegation.
The 81st Session of the UN General Assembly opens on September 8 under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The high-level week, where heads of state and government address the session, will start on September 22.
This will mark Prime Minister Shah’s first foreign visit since assuming office on March 27.
