KATHMANDU: Two days after forming a new alliance with CPN-UML and other parties, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said gaining state power is not his objective.
Dahal said his priority has always been on good governance, social justice, and bringing prosperity to the country.
Answering questions raised by lawmakers of Nepali Congress and other political parties in the House of Representatives on Thursday, he said he, on behalf of the new alliance, was committed to maintaining good governance. “I believe that we will achieve the government’s goals if we are united. I take a pledge on behalf of the alliance that our goal will not be state power, but achieving good governance, social justice, and prosperity.
Stating that he has repeatedly said that he is dissatisfied with the way the government is functioning, Dahal exuded hope that this government will deliver. “I had two options – preserving power by sticking with the government that was not delivering or take a risk to embark on national building as per our political commitments,” Dahal said. “The developments over the past two days show how risky the decision that I have taken is.”
Dahal also said the effectiveness of this government will be known by the time he undergoes a floor test.
The CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman also said that every decision that he takes is for the overall good of the country and the people. “Some people might see my decision as unstable and some as dynamic. But it is not guided by my personal interest. It is for the overall good of the nation and the people,” he added.
Dahal also insisted that he enjoys a good relation with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. “I am grateful to NC President Deuba and other friends of the party for the journey over the past 11 months. But political outcomes outweigh personal relations in politics,” he added.
