NRB’s profit doubles to Rs 87 billion

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central monetary authority, made a profit of Rs 87 billion in the fiscal year 2022/23.

The central bank earned a profit of Rs 17.11 billion on gold/silver and Rs 10 billion on its foreign currency reserves. These profits are calculated based on the valuation as per the current market prices and have not been realized.

The meeting of the board of directors of the NRB held on November 8 has decided to allocate Rs 25 billion of its profit to the government.

Apart from profits from gold/silver and foreign currency reserves, the NRB posted a profit of Rs 60.48 billion in the review year. This is more than double of Rs 28.42 billion that the central bank had profited in 2021/22.

The NRB’s interest revenue increased from Rs 33 billion to Rs 62.56 billion. This includes Rs 47.22 billion from foreign currency and Rs 15.34 billion from the local currency. Likewise, it earned Rs 4.48 billion from other sources such as fees/commissions, gold transactions, and foreign currency transactions, among others.

Meanwhile, the NRB’s expenses on staff increased from Rs 3.48 billion in 2021/22 to Rs 3.92 billion in 2022/23. Similarly, its expenses on the board of directors also increased to Rs 2.04 million, up from Rs 17.5 million in 2021/22.
