KATHMANDU: The Confederation of Nepalese Teachers (CNT) has announced a protest program to express its dissatisfaction with certain provisions of the Bill to Amend and Consolidate School Education Laws which has been registered in the House of Representatives.

Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday, the CNT argued that the Bill undermines the rights of teachers.

As part of its protest program, the CNT has announced the closure of schools across the country on September 20.

According to the CNT, the Bill has failed to address the job security of temporary teachers, create posts for school staff, and management of teachers in early childhood education centers that operate outside the existing school structure.

CNT President Kamal Tuladhar said that the Bill fails to address other important issues, such as calculating the service period of temporary teachers and their pension plans, teacher promotions, headmaster appointments, teacher transfers, and performance evaluations.

The CNT has urged the government to make permanent appointments for temporary, contract, and relief quota teachers through internal competition. It has also emphasized the need for permanent appointments of school staff and teachers in early childhood development centers. The CNT has also opposed the decision to hand over the positions of teachers in community schools to local units. Likewise, it has demanded trade union rights for teachers.
