Squatters urge RSP not to implement eviction plan

KATHMANDU: The Joint National Squatters Front has urged the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) not to implement the decision to remove squatter settlements in Kathmandu.

A delegation led by the front visited the party’s central office in Banasthali, Kathmandu, on Friday, and called on the party to halt the planned eviction.

Police have urged squatters to vacate the encroached settlement by Friday evening, adding that they would be forcefully evicted from Saturday morning.

According to the front, it submitted a memorandum to Khemraj Saud, a member of the RSP Central Committee.

Arjun Kunwar, general secretary of the front, claimed that the party assured them that no action would be taken in a manner that violates human rights.

While expressing hope for a positive outcome, Kunwar urged all affected residents to remain united and organized.

The front also warned that it would resist any unilateral or forceful attempt by the government to carry out evictions.

It has called for the immediate withdrawal of eviction notices, the resumption of the National Land Problem Resolution Commission’s work to verify records and manage settlements, and the guarantee of land and housing rights for the affected communities.
