KATHMANDU: A total of 239 people, including 158 men, 54 women and 27 children, lost their lives in road accidents across the country during the month of Baishakh (mid-May to mid-June), according to police statistics.
Likewise, 752 people sustained serious injuries, while 3,220 suffered minor injuries.
More than half of the road accidents reported across the country in the month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May) were caused by overspeeding.
Out of 2,294 road accidents recorded across the country during the month, 1,253 were caused by overspeeding.
During the review period, 137 accidents occurred due to driver incompetence, 133 due to pedestrians crossing roads in haste, 112 due to drunk driving, and 46 because of unnecessary overtaking.
Police said action was taken against 137,094 traffic rule violators during the month. A total of Rs 118.27 million was collected as fines from violators.
A total of 3,334 vehicles were involved in accidents during the period, with two-wheelers accounting for the highest number of cases.
Data show the highest number of accidents occurred between 6 pm and midnight, during which 859 accidents were recorded. Similarly, 850 accidents took place between noon and 6 pm, 506 between 6 am and noon, and 78 between midnight and 6 am.
