KATHMANDU: The government has begun surveying Bhotekoshi flood victims staying at holding centres in various districts to arrange temporary accommodation based on their preferences.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the survey aims to arrange separate temporary accommodation for each family within a few weeks.
The holding centres were established as an emergency measure following the devastating floods.
The Department of Urban Development and Building Construction under the Ministry of Urban Development has deployed teams to the affected districts from Tuesday to conduct the survey using a needs assessment form, the PMO said.
“The survey will collect details of affected individuals and families, including the extent of damage to their homes, whether the damage is complete or partial, and the number of family members who have died or remain missing,” the PMO said in a statement. “It will also record whether families prefer government-supported temporary shelters or rented accommodation, the availability of land, suitable relocation options, and their needs for drinking water, sanitation and other essential services.
The government has said that the survey would help identify the needs of every family staying at the holding centres and support the implementation of its temporary housing plan.
The survey of families at holding centres is expected to be completed within a week. The government will then survey affected families staying outside the holding centres.
