KATHMANDU: The government has reiterated that Limpiyadhura, Lipulek, and Kalapani—areas east of the Mahakali River—are integral parts of Nepali territory under the 1816 Sugauli Treaty.
Responding to media queries on reports that India and China have agreed to facilitate the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for Indian pilgrims via Lipulek Pass, foreign ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri on Sunday said the government has taken serious note of the reported arrangement and has once again conveyed Nepal’s clear position and concerns to both India and China through diplomatic channels.
“Nepal remains fully clear and steadfast that Limpiyadhura, Lipulek, and Kalapani fall within Nepal’s sovereign territory as defined by the Sugauli Treaty,” Chhetri said, adding that Nepal has consistently urged India not to carry out any activities in the disputed area, including road construction or expansion, border trade, and pilgrimage-related operations.
Chhetri also clarified that Nepal has officially informed China that the Lipulek area lies within Nepali territory.
He also reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to resolving the long-standing boundary dispute through diplomatic means, based on historical treaties, facts, maps, and evidence, in line with the spirit of the close and friendly relations between Nepal and India.
