Gurung announces further probe into royal palace massacre

KATHMANDU: Newly reappointed Minister for Home Affairs Sudhan Gurung has announced four important decisions, including starting further investigation into the 2001 Royal Palace Massacre.

Speaking after assuming office on Tuesday evening, Gurung said the government would form a task force to examine criminal cases lodged against individuals involved in the Gen Z protests. He said the government will decide whether to proceed with the case based on the task force’s recommendation.

Gurung also announced that the government would initiate further investigation into the Royal Palace massacre of 2001. He said existing investigation reports on the incident would be reviewed before proceeding with additional inquiries.

The home minister also said a Sensitive Information Vigilance Team would be established to monitor and prevent the leakage of confidential information from the Home Ministry and security agencies. Likewise, he also said a decision has been made to strengthen the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police.

Gurung, who was appointed home minister on March 27, stepped down on April 22 after questions were raised regarding his property holdings.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah reappointed him to the post after a committee formed to examine his property details submitted its report. However, the government has yet to make the report public.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in a separate report, has recommended an investigation into Gurung’s alleged role in the arson and vandalism of government property during protests on September 9 last year.
