KATHMANDU: Bagmati Chief Minister Kiran Thapa has said there has been a lack of coordination among the three tiers of government in rescue and relief operations following the Bhotekoshi floods.
In a meeting with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane on Sunday, Thapa told Lamichhane that the provincial government had been working on its own due to a lack of coordination among the three levels of government.
“It is necessary to define the responsibilities of each tier of government clearly,” Thapa said. “The provincial government was not informed when Prime Minister Balendra Shah visited the flood-affected areas.”
Thapa also said the provincial government had been unable to send relief supplies to some flood-affected areas. “Relief materials have been piling up in Battar. It has been difficult to transport them to areas further upstream,” he added.
Thapa said the three tiers of government should work together immediately to relocate settlements along riverbanks. “The effects of climate change will persist for a long time. We need to save people living along riverbanks,” Thapa said.
In response, Lamichhane said the provincial government should play a role in connecting local and federal governments during disasters.
“The government needs to work in coordination during difficult times like this,” Lamichhane said. “I will make necessary efforts to ensure all necessary support from the federal government.”
