Memorial held in Kathmandu to honor Hamas attack victims

KATHMANDU: A memorial event was held in Kathmandu on Thursday to honor the victims of the October 7, 2023 , Hamas terrorist attack in Israel.

The attack claimed the lives of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, including 11 Nepali students who were in Israel as part of an agricultural training program. Among them was Bipin Joshi, who was abducted alive on October 7 and remained missing for nearly two years before his death was recently confirmed.

The memorial brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, media representatives, and other dignitaries to pay tribute to the victims and express solidarity with the people of Israel and Nepal, according to a statement issued by the Israeli embassy.

The event opened with the screening of raw footage showing the scale of atrocities committed by Hamas and other groups during the attack — including scenes of mass killings, kidnappings, and acts of brutality described as war crimes. Participants then lit candles and observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims.

On the occasion, Deputy Chief of Mission Janan Bebar made a presentation, highlighting the human toll of the tragedy. She spoke about the abduction and killing of Bipin Joshi, the findings of the Dinnah Report on sexual violence and torture, and the massacre at the Nova Music Festival.

Basant Raj Bista, representing the family of the late Dipesh Raj Bista, shared a personal reflection of loss and resilience. Likewise, Himanchal Kattel, a Nepali survivor of the attack, recounted his harrowing experience from that day.

In his address, Ambassador of Israel to Nepal Shmulik Arie Bass said the brutal attack has permanently linked the fates of our peoples. “The Government of Israel remains committed to standing by the victims’ families,” he added.

Supreme Court Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel expressed hope that peace would prevail in the region. “As peace has no alternative, I hope the recent peace accord will bring lasting peace in the region and justice may prevail for the victims,” he added.
