Govt committed to ‘One China’ policy: Foreign ministry

KATHMANDU: The government on Friday reiterated Nepal’s commitment to the ‘One China’ policy, while also reaffirming that it will not allow its territory to be used against the interests of any neighboring country.

Speaking at a regular press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri said Nepal is firmly committed to the ‘One China’ policy.

Without referring to the recent controversy surrounding the celebration of the Dalai Lama’s birthday in Kathmandu or the objections raised by seven former Nepali ambassadors to China, Chhetri said Nepal continues to adhere to its long-standing foreign policy principles.

He also reiterated Nepal’s established policy of ensuring that its territory is not used in any manner detrimental to the interests of neighboring countries.

During the briefing, Chhetri also updated journalists on the government’s efforts to rescue Nepali nationals trapped in online scam centers operating in Southeast Asia.

According to him, 836 Nepalis have so far been rescued from fraudulent online scam centers operating in Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and along the Thailand border. Of them, 709 were rescued from Cambodia, 113 from Myanmar, eight from Laos and six from Thailand.

Chhetri said the Cambodian government has waived visa overstay fees and penalties for Nepalis stranded in the country. This has benefited 602 Nepalis who have overstayed their visa, Chhetri said.

Responding to a query about when new ambassadors will be appointed, Chhetri said the selection process is ongoing and that the government will provide updates if there are any new developments.
