KATHMANDU: Nepal Premier League (NPL) franchise Pokhara Avengers have announced the signing of Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the third edition of the tournament.
“From the world stage to the peaks of Pokhara! The greatest all-rounder in cricket history is now an Avenger for Nepal Premier League Season 3. Welcome to the family, Shakib Al Hasan!” the franchise said in a social media post on Monday.
The 39-year-old left-handed batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler is among the most decorated Bangladeshi cricketers. A former Bangladesh captain, Shakib has worn the national colors in more than 400 international matches across formats and has consistently been ranked among the world’s top all-rounders.
However, it remains unclear whether Shakib will be available for the entire season given his involvement in franchise cricket leagues after he called time on his international career.
Shakib’s arrival adds further star power to the NPL, which has attracted several renowned cricketers, including Shikhar Dhawan (Karnali Yaks), Faf du Plessis and Martin Guptill (Biratnagar Kings), Chris Lynn (Sudurashchim Royals), Jimmy Neesham (Pokhara Avengers/Janakpur Bolts), Imran Tahir (Chitwan Rhinos/Janakpur Bolts), among others, since its inception in 2024.
NPL is a T20 franchise league featuring eight teams – Biratnagar Kings, Janakpur Bolts, Kathmandu Gorkhas, Pokhara Avengers, Chitwan Rhinos, Lumbini Lions, Karnali Yaks and Sudurpashchim Royals.
While dates for the third season of NPL have not been announced yet, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) said in its annual calendar for 2026 that the league would be held in October-November.
Meanwhile, Pokhara Avengers has announced former Sri Lankan spinner Ajanta Mendis as its Head Coach for the 2026 season.
