KATHMANDU: Nepal and India have reviewed bilateral cooperation in the power sector.
The 13th meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on Power Sector Cooperation, held in Pokhara on Tuesday, reviewed the bilateral power sector cooperation, including the development of hydropower projects, power trade and transmission infrastructure.
The meeting was co-chaired by Energy Secretary Sarita Dawadi and her Indian counterpart Pankaj Agarwal.
The JSC meeting was preceded by the 13th meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Power Sector Cooperation on Monday. The JWG meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Sandip Kumar Dev and Pankaj Kumar, Joint Secretary (Transmission) at India’s Ministry of Power.
The officials welcomed the progress made in developing new cross-border transmission lines, particularly the 400 kV Gorakhpur–New Butwal line, and discussed measures to expedite the implementation of ongoing as well as planned power generation and transmission projects.
The meetings also covered issues such as coordinated operation of the Indian and Nepali power grids, development of solar energy projects, cooperation in green hydrogen and capacity-building initiatives for Nepali energy professionals.
Before the Joint Steering Committee meeting, Indian Power Secretary Agarwal paid a courtesy call on Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, on Monday.
