KATHMANDU: The death toll from the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood has crossed 1,400.
The number went past 1,400 after rescue workers recovered five bodies from the tunnel of the Chilime Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the total number of deceased reached 1,403 as of 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
A total of 364 bodies were recovered in Chitwan, 232 in Nawalparasi East, 222 in Nawalparasi West, 202 in Nuwakot, 193 in Rasuwa, 76 in Gorkha, 72 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahun. Similarly, two died while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu.
The deceased include 544 males and 336 females, while 532 are mutilated bodies.
A total of 6,150, including 587 foreigners, are still missing.
According to NDRRMA, people rescued from the flood-affected areas have been kept at 29 holding centers. Holding centers in Nuwakot have 1,185 flood-affected people, while those in Rasuwa and Dhading have 817 and 94 people, respectively.
