KATHMANDU: Electric vehicle (EV) imports declined sharply in fiscal year 2025/26.
However, imports of petrol-powered cars, jeeps and vans increased during the review period, according to foreign trade data of the last fiscal year released by the Department of Customs,
Electric vehicle imports fell by 20.11% to 10,847 in 2025/26. Such imports stood at 13,578 units in 2024/25. This represents a year-on-year decline of 2,731 units.
Customs data shows Nepal imported EVs worth Rs 25.56 billion in the last fiscal year. These imports generated a revenue of Rs 15.47 billion for the government.
Of the total EVs imported, 3,680 units had motor capacities of up to 50 kW, while 6,357 units were in the 51-100 kW category. Similarly, 798 units were in the 101-200 kW range, while 10 units had capacities above 201 kW. Two unassembled EVs with capacities of up to 50 kW were also imported during the year.
Despite the decline, EVs accounted for 68.63% of all cars, jeeps and vans imported in 2025/26.
Total car, jeep and van imports also fell during the review period. Data show Nepal imported 15,806 cars, jeeps and vans in the last fiscal year, down 10.80%, or 1,914 units, from 17,720 units imported in fiscal year 2024/25.
However, imports of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, jeeps and vans went up by 19.72% to 4,959 units in 2025/26. Such imports stood at 4,142 units in the previous fiscal year.
Total import value of overall cars, jeeps and vans stood at Rs 30.24 billion in the last fiscal year, down from Rs 36.44 billion in 2024/25. The government mobilized revenue of Rs 26.06 billion from such imports.
