KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index shed 26.72 points on Monday, the first trading session after the government unveiled its budget for fiscal year 2026/27, suggesting that investors were unimpressed by the policy measures announced in the spending plan.
Minister for Finance Swarnim Wagle presented a budget of Rs 2,124.34 billion in the joint sitting of the federal parliament on Friday.
The index moved into green territory during early trading. However, after hitting an intraday high of 2,789.25 points, it moved into the red and remained there throughout the session.
Unit prices of 233 scrips declined on Monday, while 35 advanced and two remained unchanged. Total turnover fell to Rs 5.61 billion with 13.38 million units traded through 63,719 transactions.
Among individual stocks, Nepal Reinsurance Company and Kalinchowk Hydropower Ltd posted the highest gain, hitting the 15% positive circuit. On the other hand, Bungal Hydro Ltd registered the biggest loss of 13.2%. Ankhukhola Jalvidyut Company Ltd recorded the highest turnover of Rs 430.45 million. Next were Nepal Reinsurance Company Ltd and Himalayan Reinsurance Ltd with turnovers of Rs 371.3 million and Rs 257.73 million, respectively.
Except for the Others and the Non-Life Insurance sub-indices, all trading groups ended the session in the red. The biggest loss came from the Trading sub-index, which fell by 6.14%. On the other hand, the other sub-index posted the highest gain of 3.36%.
