bKATHMANDU: The Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) has said that it will accept the Supreme Court’s decision to recognize the Central Working Committee (CWC) elected through the party’s Special General Convention held in January.
According to Deuba faction leader Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, a meeting of former office-bearers of the party held at the residence of former Acting President Purna Bahadur Khaka on Saturday held discussions on the apex court’s decision to uphold the Election Commission’s decision to grant legitimacy to the new leadership elected by the special convention.
“Although there are many disagreements with the Supreme Court’s decision and that parts of the verdict were contradictory and controversial, we have decided to accept the ruling in keeping with the party’s longstanding commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary,” Bishwakarma told reporters after the meeting.
He, however, added that Saturday’s gathering was not a formal meeting but only an informal discussion among party leaders.
Bishwkarma also said Khadka is now former acting president of the party. “He moved the apex courtin the capacity of acting president, and remained acting president as long as the case was sub judice,” Bishwakarma added.
The Supreme Court late Friday evening upheld the Election Commission’s decision to validate the Gagan Kumar Thapa-led Central Working Committee elected through the special general convention.
The Deuba faction had filed petition against the Election Commission’s decision. The apex court dismissed the petition on Friday.
