KATHMANDU: Two climbers and three mountain guides have died while attempting different mountaineering peaks in Nepal this spring season.
According to the Department of Tourism (DoT), David Roubinek of the Czech Republic and Johannesen Sheely died while attempting Makalu II (7,678m) and Makalu I (8,463m), respectively. Roubinek died due to altitude sickness at 7,300 metres on May 4. Similarly, Sheely breathed her last at an altitude of 7,200 metres on May 11 when an avalanche hit her while descending the mountain.
Roubinek was a member of the IAM Treks Makalu II Expedition operated by IAM Treks and Expeditions. Likewise, Sheely was part of the SST Makalu Expedition Spring handled by Seven Summit Treks.
Similarly, Nepali mountain guides Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, Bijay Ghimire, and Phura Gyaljen Sherpa lost their lives on the slopes of Mt Everest. According to the DoT, Lakpa Dendi died near Everest Base Camp on May 3, Bijay at the Khumbu Icefall on May 10, and Phura Gyaljen at Camp III of Mt Everest on May 11.
The three were part of different expedition teams on Mt Everest.
A total of 492 climbers have received permission to climb Mt Everest during the spring season.
