KATHMANDU: Dozens of passengers stranded after floodwaters swollen by heavy rainfall blocked a section of the BP Highway in Kavre were rescued on Monday evening.
Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal personnel rescued more than 60 passengers from five vans stuck in the floods.
According to the APF Nepal Joint Spokesperson DSP Shailendra Thapa, rising water levels in the Roshi River caused severe erosion and completely obstructed the road at Chaukidanda in Namobuddha Municipality–6 and at Charsaya Besi in Roshi Rural Municipality–7.
“Some 60-65 passengers traveling in five vans were rescued using ropes and the assistance of excavators. The rescue operation was launched immediately after the APF Nepal received information that the vehicles had been trapped in the river,” Thapa added.
A team from APF Battalion No. 15, Kavre, along with personnel from the monsoon response base in Bhakunde, was deployed to carry out the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, 160 vehicles heading toward Kathmandu from Lastol in Roshi–7 along the BP Highway have been stopped citing potential risks from the rising river and damaged road sections.
