KATHMANDU: The Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress (NC) held a discussion on the resignation offered by its President, Gagan Kumar Thapa.
During the meeting, Vice President Bishwo Prakash Sharma had tabled a proposal to reject Thapa’s resignation. “In politics, the first 100 days after someone assumes leadership is referred to as the ‘honeymoon period’. During the period, one can observe positive or negative aspects of the performance, but a complete evaluation or overall review cannot be made,” Sharma stated, while tabling the proposal. “From that perspective, it would neither be reasonable nor fair to expect decisive results from a new leadership within just 50 days of taking charge following the party’s special general convention.”
Sharma said it would not be just to the party organization for the president to step down rather than lead the party through adversity toward a more favourable situation.
Thapa, who was elected party president through a special general convention less than two months before the March 5 parliamentary polls, had tendered his resignation on Wednesday, taking responsibility for the party’s poor electoral performance.
The Central Working Committee will deliberate on the issue on Sunday as well, according to leaders.
