Mahottari woman arrested for alleged murder of ex-lover

KATHMANDU: Police in Dhanusha have arrested a woman for investigation into the murder of Bimalesh Yadav (28) aka Sunny of Parsa in Mahottari Rural Municipality-1 of Mahottari district.

Preliminary investigation shows Julie Jha (24) of Banauta in Balaba Municipality-7 of Mahottari stabbed Bimalesh multiple times in the room of Hotel SP and Guest House in Janakpur and pushed the body from the first floor, police say.

CCTV footage shows the two arriving at the hotel together at 9:55 pm on Saturday. At 2:57 am on Sunday, Bimalesh can be seen falling from the first floor, naked and bleeding. Moments later, Julie is seen coming downstairs and fleeing past where Bimalesh had landed.

The footage shows Julie appearing calm when entering the hotel but visibly distressed while leaving after the incident.

Police reached the scene shortly afterward. Although critically injured, Bimalesh managed to give a statement to the police at the scene and climbed into the ambulance himself. He died while undergoing treatment at the Provincial Hospital in Janakpur at 7:45 am on Sunday.

Based on the CCTV evidence, police arrested Julie on Sunday from Paraul in Mahottari, according to DSP Barun Kumar Singh, the spokesperson for the District Police Office, Dhanusha.

Julie told police the two were previously in a romantic relationship. “But Julie was unaware that Bimalesh was already married. After finding out, she reportedly broke off the relationship,” DSP Singh said. “Julie told police that Bimalesh tried to force her to continue the relationship despite her refusal.”

He added that Bimalesh appears to have blackmailed Julie using old videos and photos. “Based on the preliminary investigation, we suspect that this blackmail led to the fatal incident,” Singh added.

Although the two checked into the hotel willingly, police say what exactly transpired until nearly 3 am is still under investigation.
“CCTV footage shows the two entering the hotel in a normal state. We are investigating the events between check-in and the incident. As of now, Julie is the only suspect,” Singh said.

Bimalesh, who was in Qatar for employment, had returned only six months ago. Locals say he used to send money to Julie while abroad. They suspect financial issues may also have played a role in the murder.

Police, however, say money-related motives have not been confirmed in the investigation so far.
