Oli condemns govt’s silence, excessive use of force

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has expressed serious concern over the fatal shootings in Dewangunj Rural Municipality of Sunsari and Siraha.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Oli expressed sorrow over the death of Om Prakash Mehta in Dewangunj and Ganesh Yadav in Siraha in police firing. He urged the government to stop the use of force and seek an immediate resolution through dialogue.

“The government’s indifference, excessive use of force and silence even as national security and social order have reached a sensitive stage, are highly questionable and condemnable,” Oli said. “I urge the government to immediately stop violent actions and seek a solution through dialogue without delay.”

Oli also called on people to exercise restraint and preserve social harmony. Warning that misleading information aimed at dividing the public could spread, he urged UML leaders and cadres, other political parties, civil society, media professionals and the general public not to be influenced by such misinformation.

Saying that the country is passing through difficult circumstances, Oli called on major political parties to rise above political rivalry and blame games, and work together to maintain peace, security and stability. He added that conflict and violence cannot resolve any problem, and that only dialogue, consensus and responsible political cooperation can help the country overcome the current crisis.

The former prime minister also appealed to all political parties, civil society, intellectuals, and religious and social leaders to unite in the national interest and work towards restoring peace.

He paid tribute to the deceased, extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
