KATHMANDU: Israel has claimed that Nepali student Bipin Joshi, who went missing following Hamas attack on Israel in October last year, is alive.
Newly-appointed ambassador of Israel to Nepal, Shmulik Arie Bass, said at a press meet on Thursday that he has received information from Arab sources confirming Joshi’s well-being.
Ten Nepali students lost their lives, while six sustained critical injuries, and one, Bipin Joshi, was abducted during the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel. All were participants of Israel’s “Learn and Earn” program.
“I have received indications from Arab sources that Bipin Joshi is alive,” Bass said. “However, we do not have details about his condition or whereabouts. If our efforts are successful, he will soon be released and return home.”
Ambassador Bass said 54 other hostages like Joshi have been freed from captivity. “Efforts are underway to secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages, including Joshi. Diplomatic initiatives across multiple channels are underway,” Bass added.
Ambassador Bass also said Israel remains vigilant despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. “If there is an attack on our citizens, Israel will retaliate decisively,” he added.
Bass also criticized certain Muslim nations for using proxy groups to provoke Israel, terming such actions as immature diplomacy.
Reflecting on Nepal-Israel relations, Ambassador Bass highlighted the role of late Nepali leader BP Koirala in giving recognition to Israel in 1960, ahead of regional powers like India and China.
While Israel established its embassy in Nepal soon after, Nepal opened its embassy in Israel only in 2007. Israel has been providing support to Nepal in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, technology, tourism, rural development, environment and education.
