KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Centre) has chosen Prof Dr Shiva Sharan Maharjan as its candidate for the mayoral by-election in Kirtipur Municipality.
The Kirtipur Municipal Committee meeting of the party held in the presence of the party’s Bagmati Province Committee In-charge, Agni Prasad Sapkota, selected Prof Dr Maharjan for the position.
The Election Commission his holding local body by-elections on December 1.
CPN-UML has already picked Surendra Manandhar as its candidate for the position, while Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has selected Dhruva Maharjan.
The position has been vacant since July 26, following the passing of Raj Kumar Nakarmi, who had been suffering from kidney ailments.
A total of 41 positions, including two district coordination committee chiefs; one mayor, one deputy mayor, and 21 municipal ward chairs; and two chairs, four vice-chairs, and 10 ward chairs of rural municipalities, are lying vacant in local governments.
