KATHMANDU: Water supply to the Kathmandu Valley from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project has been temporarily suspended from Friday after floodwaters entered the project’s intake in Ambathang of Sindhupalchowk following heavy rainfall.
According to Bir Bahadur Chand, spokesperson for Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the water at the Melamchi intake has turned extremely muddy due to flooding.
“As it is difficult to treat muddy water at the treatment plant in Sundraijal, we have decided to halt supply temporarily,” Chand said. “Once the water quality improves, the treatment process will resume and the water supply will be restored according to the existing distribution schedule.”
The project supplies 170 million liters of water to Kathmandu Valley every day.
