KATHMANDU: The Madhesh Province Government led by Krishna Prasad Yadav of Nepali Congress (NC) has fallen into uncertainty after a majority of Janamat Party lawmakers decided to withdraw their support.
A meeting of the Janamat Party’s parliamentary party held 11 days ago decided to withdraw the support. The meeting minutes were made public late on Monday.
The party’s parliamentary party leader, Mahesh Prasad Yadav, however, was not present in the meeting. He is currently the Minister for Finance.
While the withdrawal of support by Janamat lawmakers won’t push Yadav into a minority yet, his government will be in trouble if the party joins hands with the main opposition CPN-UML to work out a new alliance. Chief Minister Yadav had the support of 77 lawmakers when he assumed office as the Chief Minister. Janamat has 12 lawmakers, including the Speaker, in the provincial assembly.
A support of 54 lawmakers is needed to form a government in the 108-member Mahesh Province Assembly.
Yadav was elected Chief Minister on December 5 last year with the support of Janamat Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, Janamat Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), and Nagarik Unmukti Party. He had the support of 77 legislators when he assumed office as the Chief Minister.
