LSP exits Madhesh government

KATHMANDU: Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) has exited the Madhesh Province Government.

A meeting of the party’s parliamentary party held on Tuesday decided to exit the government and not give a vote of confidence to Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).

Yadav decided to undergo a fresh floor test after the Nepali Congress (NC) withdrew its support extended to his government. He needs to have the support of 54 members in the 107-member province assembly.

Following the party’s decision, LSP’s Ramesh Kumar Kurmi has resigned as the Minister for Forest and Environment.

LSP, which has nine members in the Madhesh Province Assembly, had been demanding one more ministry.

CPN-UML is the largest party in the Madhesh Province Assembly with 24 seats, followed by Nepali Congress with 22, JSP with 19, and Janamat party with 13. Likewise, CPN (Maoist Center) and LSP each have nine members while CPN (Unified Socialist) has seven, and Nagarik Unmukti, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and Sanghiya Samajbadi Party have one member each. The province assembly also has an independent member.
