KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued a short-term interim order against the government’s decision to dissolve student organisations.

A single bench of Justice Shrikanta Paudel issued the order on Monday, hearing a writ petition filed by Deepak Dhami, chairperson of CPN-UML’s student wing—All Nepal National Free Student Union, and others.

The bench also ordered the defendants to explain, in writing, why an interim order should not be issued as demanded by the petitioners.

The petitioners had made the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers defendants in the case. They have demanded a writ of certiorari against the defendants.

The bench also summoned both parties for discussions before deciding whether to issue an interim order in the case.

A cabinet meeting held on March 27 gave authorities and administration of educational institutions 60 days to remove party structures from educational institutions.

Student unions of major political parties had challenged the government decision at the apex court on May 8, arguing that it was against the constitutional rights to freedom of organisation, freedom of expression, and democratic rights.
