IMF okays two-month extension of Nepal’s ECF

KATHMANDU: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved Nepal’s request for a two-month extension of its Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement until July 11, 2026.

According to the IMF, its Executive Board on Wednesday decided to grant the extension to allow Nepal sufficient time to complete the seventh and final review of the ECF program.

The IMF Executive Board approved Nepal’s 38-month ECF arrangement on January 12, 2022, allowing the country to access SDR 282.42 million (equivalent to $384.4 million).

The IMF had earlier extended the programme until January 11, 2026, in May 2023, along with a rephasing of disbursements, but without additional access. Another extension until May 11, 2026, was approved in December 2025, also without additional access.

The ECF is a concessional lending facility designed to support low-income countries facing prolonged balance of payments problems. Nepal has been implementing various reform measures under the program, including efforts to strengthen public finance management, maintain macroeconomic stability and improve financial sector oversight.
