Govt not taking constitutional amendment seriously: Thapa

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has accused the government of failing to take the issue of constitutional amendment seriously.

Speaking at a program held at the party’s central office in Lalitpur on Sunday, Thapa said the constitution cannot be amended recklessly.

“The government has failed to give adequate importance to the sensitive issues incorporated during the drafting of the constitution,” Thapa said. “While there is a need for constitutional amendment and review, the process must be carried out responsibly, prudently and on the basis of national consensus.”

Thapa also said that any amendment to the constitution should further strengthen state institutions. He added that careless interference in constitutional provisions related to language, ethnic identity, and diversity could create unnecessary conflict in the country.

The NC President also criticized the government’s approach toward the private sector. “NC is not against legal action against anyone involved in economic crimes. However, it is inappropriate to treat the entire private sector as criminals or fraudsters in the name of such actions,” he added.

Thapa added that a growing tendency to view construction entrepreneurs, bankers, and other businesspeople with suspicion has damaged the country’s investment climate. “The fear created by the government has discouraged entrepreneurs from starting new businesses,” he said. “The government has failed to build confidence among investors—whether small, medium, or large.”
