KATHMANDU: The government has formed a high-powered commission to investigate the assets of individuals and high-ranking government employees who have held public office since fiscal year 2005/06.
A cabinet meeting held on Wednesday decided to form a five-member commission under the leadership of former Supreme Court Justice Rajendra Kumar Bhandari.
According to the Government Spokesperson and Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Sashmit Pokharel, the commission has been tasked with collecting and investigating the asset details of major political office-bearers and high-ranking government officials who have held public positions from 2005/06 to the current fiscal year 2025/26.
Former Supreme Court Justices Chandi Raj Dhakal and Purushottam Parajuli, former Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Ganesh KC, and Chartered Accountant Prakash Lamsal are members of the commission.
The first meeting of Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s cabinet had decided to form a high-powered commission to investigate the property of political appointees and civil servants since 1990 within 15 days. Formation of such a commission was also included in the government’s 100-point action plan to promote good governance.
The government has stated that the investigation will be carried out in a fair, evidence-based manner as per the existing laws. It has also expressed commitment to implement the commission’s report and recommendations through the concerned authorities.
