KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said that authoritarian tendencies have begun to emerge within the party founded to establish democracy and end autocracy in the country.
Speaking at a provincial-level gathering of the anti-establishment faction of the party in Biratnagar on Sunday, warned that democracy is currently in one of its weakest phases in the country’s history.
“The national unity and reconciliation policy introduced by late BP Koirala in 1976 has become even more relevant today. There is no alternative for NC except to move forward based on the principles of national unity and reconciliation,” he added.
Koirala added that cooperation and unity among all forces were a must to strengthen nationalism, sovereignty, territorial integrity and democracy.
He also revealed that NC President Gagan Kumar Thapa had accepted his five-point proposal during their recent conversation. “What is stopping him from reaching an agreement now?” he questioned. “I made those proposals public after Thapa reached my residence and threatened disciplinary action against our friends in the party.”
Koirala further said that the party cannot move even a single step without consensus. “The tradition of agreement, cooperation and unity championed by Girija Prasad Koirala must begin within the party itself,” he said, reiterating his commitment not to allow the party to split under any circumstances.
