Gurung meets evicted squatter families at Balaju holding center

KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Sudhan Gurung on Friday visited landless squatter families forcefully removed from riverbank settlements across the Kathmandu Valley and currently sheltering at two holding centers in Balaju.

During the surprise inspection, Gurung interacted with affected residents, many of whom voiced concerns over their uncertain future despite receiving temporary food, accommodation and security support.

The displaced families said their primary demand is permanent rehabilitation and that immediate relief alone is insufficient. Many complained that they were given little time to vacate their homes before demolition and said they have lost both shelter and sources of income.

Parents also expressed concern about disruptions to their children’s education. Similarly, elderly residents and patients said they were facing difficulties in accessing regular healthcare services.

According to residents, successive governments have repeatedly promised solutions to the landless squatters’ problem but failed to implement them effectively.

During the visit, Gurung assured families that the government would work with local authorities and security agencies to seek a long-term solution to the problem. He also expressed commitment to improving conditions at the holding centers.
