KATHMANDU: Opposition lawmakers obstructed a meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Tuesday, demanding that Prime Minister Balendra Shah be present in parliament to attend discussions on the government’s policy and program for the fiscal year 2026/27 and respond to queries raised by lawmakers.
PM Shah was scheduled to attend Tuesday’s meeting to participate in deliberations on the policy and program.
Opposition lawmakers obstructed the meeting after Prime Minister Shah failed to attend the session and Minister for Finance Dr Swarnim Wagle attempted to respond on behalf of the government. Some even demanded the resignation of the prime minister remaining absent during such an important parliamentary discussion.
The main opposition party, the Nepali Congress (NC), urged Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal to issue a ruling directing Prime Minister Shah to appear before the House and answer concerns raised by lawmakers.
However, Speaker Aryal said the issue should be resolved through dialogue rather than a formal ruling.
Speaker Aryal later suspended the meeting and held consultations with leaders of major parties.
After receiving assurances that the Prime Minister would attend the meeting, Finance Minister Wagle formally presented the policy and programmes for discussion.
However, opposition lawmakers again disrupted the session, insisting that Prime Minister Shah must be present during the deliberations.
