Major political parties should participate in upcoming polls: Dr Singh

KATHMANDU: Dr Amaresh Kumar Singh, a former lawmaker from Sarlahi-4, has urged major political parties to create an environment for immediate elections to resolve the country’s ongoing political crisis.

Analysing Nepal’s current political landscape, the internal dynamics of political parties, and growing international interest, Dr Singh described elections as the cornerstone of political stability in the country.

Speaking to Himal Press over the phone, Dr Singh, who is currently in Dehradun, India, for his children’s education, said political leaders have pushed the country towards uncertainty by focusing on power and personal gain. “What we need now is a fresh public mandate through elections,” he added.

According to Dr Singh, while the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (Maoist Center) appear ready for elections, the CPN-UML seems hesitant. He also said UML has failed to remain dynamic due to internal challenges within the party’s leadership. “If UML does not undergo a leadership change, it risks losing its relevance,” he added.

Dr Singh believes leadership change within the Maoist Center is possible if internal challenges to the current leadership intensify. He sees the prospect of new leadership in NC as stronger. “NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba is an honest and experienced leader, but he has lately come under the influence of the wrong people. If he were to hand over leadership, his stature would only grow,” Dr Singh added.

Expressing confidence that Dr Shekhar Koirala could lead the Nepali Congress forward, Dr Singh said the NC will move ahead under Dr Koirala’s leadership, and in time, a new generation — perhaps among us — will take the party’s helm. “Our generation will now give NC new momentum,” Singh, who contested the election as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the NC, said.

While acknowledging the need for constitutional amendments, he said such changes should only come after the elections. “The constitution must be updated in line with the times, but using that as a pretext to delay elections would be disastrous,” he warned.
