KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, has urged the international community to vote for Nepal’s candidacy for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Minister Deuba appealed to ambassadors and representatives of various countries present in Geneva to support Nepal’s bid. She made the appeal during a welcome reception hosted by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in Geneva in her honor. The event was attended by heads of permanent missions from over 100 countries and representatives of various international organizations.
On the occasion, Minister Deuba highlighted Nepal’s achievements in the protection and promotion of human rights despite limited resources and called on the international community to consider these efforts while casting their votes. “Nepal has been working tirelessly for the protection and promotion of human rights for a long time. With this commitment, Nepal has announced its candidacy for membership in the UNHRC for the 2027–2029 term. I urge all member states of the United Nations to support Nepal,” she said.
She also shared Nepal’s recent achievements in safeguarding the rights of children, women, and minorities, as well as in promoting inclusivity. She reiterated that the Nepal government has always stood in favor of the independence of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Minister Deuba arrived in Geneva on Saturday, leading a six-member Nepali delegation.
