BUTWAL: Lumbini Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya has secured a vote of confidence.
Forty-five lawmakers voted in favor of Acharya’s motion of confidence at a meeting of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly on Monday.
A majority of 42 is needed to form a government in the 83-member provincial assembly.
Acharya received backing from lawmakers of his party, the CPN-UML, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) and the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal. Similarly, the Nepali Congress (NC) and Janamat Party voted against the motion, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) remained neutral.
Interestingly, JSP Nepal had withdrawn its support for Acharya’s government on Monday morning and instructed its lawmakers in the provincial assembly to vote against Chief Minister Acharya’s motion of confidence.
A total of 71 members participated in the vote. Twenty-six members voted against the motion, while eight lawmakers were absent on Monday.
Speaker Tula Ram Gharti Magar announced after the vote that Chief Minister Acharya had secured the confidence of the provincial assembly with 45 votes.
Acharya registered a motion of confidence after his coalition partner, the Nepali Congress, notified the provincial assembly secretariat of its decision to withdraw support for the government on July 28.
