KATHMANDU: In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Jajarkot, Nepal, on Friday, India sent its first consignment of emergency relief materials, valued at INR 100 million, to Nepalgunj on Sunday.

A special Indian Air Force C-130 flight delivered over 11 tons of essential relief supplies, including tents, tarpaulin sheets, blankets, sleeping bags, and crucial medical equipment such as portable ventilators, to assist the earthquake victims, according to a press release issued by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu. Indian ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava handed over the relief materials to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Minister, Purna Bahadur Khadka, in the presence of Karnali Province’s Chief Minister Raj Kumar Sharma.

“Further consignments of the relief material are expected to arrive in the coming days. As a close friend and neighbor, India remains committed to extending all possible support to those affected by the earthquake in Nepal,” the embassy said in the release.

India had also extended $1 billion to Nepal as part of its long-term assistance for post-earthquake reconstruction in housing, education, health, and cultural heritage sectors and included reconstruction of 50,000 houses in Nepal’s Gorkha and Nuwakot districts after the 2015 earthquakes.
