Hesitation to form a high-level commission is raising suspicions: Oli

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has called for the formation of a high-level judicial commission to investigate the case involving the smuggling of 100 kg of gold.

Organizing a press conference at the party headquarters in Chyasal on Sunday, Oli emphasized the need for a judicial commission to ensure a thorough investigation into the gold smuggling. “Otherwise, the investigation will fail to uncover the full extent of the scam,” he said.

Oli said that such a massive gold smuggling operation could not occur without the involvement of individuals in influential positions. “The smuggling is going unabated even today,” he added.

Highlighting the magnitude of the issue, he revealed that around 100 kg of illegal gold is being brought into Nepal daily under various guises. “Gold is being illicitly transported into the country using different disguises such as brake shoes, e-cigarettes, and motors. Many of these items are being released from customs offices without undergoing proper inspection,” he added.

Oli also pointed out that customs revenue collection has suffered due to a lack of adequate checks at customs offices. He added, “This deficiency explains the decline in customs duty collection,” he added.

The former prime minister also said that the hesitation of the ruling parties to form a high-level commission raises suspicions. He asked, “If they have nothing to hide, why are they delaying the formation of the commission?” he questioned.

In a separate context, Oli criticized the government for arresting lawmaker Sunil Sharma under allegations of possessing a fake academic certificate. He claimed that this move was intended to weaken the ongoing protests against the government.
