KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) parliamentary party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s move to bring ordinances by halting the parliamentary session.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Angdembe described the government’s step as undemocratic and an insult to Parliament. “Introducing ordinances by postponing a session of federal parliament is an undemocratic act by a government formed through a democratic process,” he said in the statement.
Angdembe also questioned Prime Minister Balendra Shaha why he appeared to distrust both his own party’s majority and the dignity of parliament. “I want to ask the Prime Minister why there is a lack of confidence in your own party’s majority? Why undermine the dignity and spirit of Parliament?” he said.
Angdembe also said important issues, such as amendments related to the Constitutional Council Act and the Cooperative Act, should have been resolved through parliament. “The bill related to the Constitutional Council was already under parliamentary discussion and could have been concluded through dialogue and consensus,” Angdembe said. “Serious matters like amendments to the Cooperative Act should also be finalized through parliament.”
Claiming that there is no emergency in the country that necessitates ordinances, he termed the government’s attempt to enact laws without consulting the main opposition and other parties as politics of coercion.
